When people need help in troubled times, they can turn to the Red Cross and its Emergency Community Services personnel. Volunteers and staff are trained and equipped to help deal with a multitude of problems.

Community Information and Referral

The Mission of the Red Cross is to help people prevent, prepare for, and cope with emergencies. Because of our long history of helping others and an internationally recognized symbol of help, the Red Cross is the place many individuals turn to for assistance.

Sometimes we don't have a program to assist the particular needs of a family or individual. However, we want to be able to provide a fast friendly referral to other organizations in our community that may be able to help.

We provide referrals to agencies that have programs that match the individuals needs. We make a determined effort to put them in touch with the appropriate organization that CAN help, and encourage them to contact us when a referral is unsuccessful, so we can continue to work with them.

Many people who feel lost, abandoned, or otherwise helpless in the face of a crisis, find caring, sensitive support and, most often, receive successful referrals from our Red Cross volunteers.

Language Bank

Occasionally, a situation develops in which there is a need to provide translation services for a person who does not speak English. Such situations have included car accidents, medical emergencies, legal emergencies, etc. The Red Cross has more than 20 volunteers available who can read, write, and/or speak 18 different languages, including American Sign Language. We have provided this service for international exchange students and other visitors, for area police departments, and for hospitals, as well as for a variety of other situations.
