Help Keep People Warm This Winter!
It's that time of year again when the cold weather that poses a threat to the economically disadvantaged in our community. As a result, the American Red Cross, in cooperation with DTE Energy, provides a Heatbank for those who have difficulty in paying their heating bills. The program runs from October to May.
"As with most of our Red Cross programs, the Heatbank is run by volunteers," said Penny Albertie, Director of Community Volunteer Services. "We are currently looking for volunteers to help screen and interview individuals who are having difficulty paying their heating bills."
Individuals interesting in volunteering will be given training to do the casework functions of the job. Those interested must be non-judgmental, have good telephone and people skills, and be detail oriented. Casework or social work experience is helpful, but not mandatory since training will be provided.
Volunteers in this program work ½ to 1 day per week screening and determining eligibility for assistance.
"Everyday, countless lives in our community are touched by compassionate Red Cross volunteers carrying out the mission of our organization" said Ms. Albertie. "We invite you to become a volunteer and to work with us to help improve the quality of life in our community."
