While responding to this great national tragedy, the Red Cross continued its mission of helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to life's emergencies-helping to save lives everyday. Locally, thousands of Red Cross volunteers continued their daily work. Just since September 11 your local Red Cross chapter has:
- Helped 125 individuals whose homes were destroyed by fire.
- Opened and operated a shelter for those forced from their home by recent massive power outages.
- Planned and organized 69 blood drives that drew 2,978 units of life saving blood.
- Sent 54 emergency messages between area families and their loved ones in the Armed Services.
- Provided over 4,900 trips for senior citizens to dialysis and medical appointments.
- Taught 2,251 individuals CPR, first aid, babysitting or other health education.
- Assisted 266 low income or unemployed individuals by paying their heating bills.
- Trained over 60 new volunteers who will assist with all of this good work.
September 11 forever changed the landscape of our country and the life of every American. Thanks to thousands of Americans who have given their time, their money, and their blood, we are truly making a difference not only in the lives of those so tragically affected by the attacks of September 11, but virtually everyday in the lives of your family, friends and neighbors right here in our own community.
Thank you, America for reaching out and continuing to trust and support the American Red Cross as we bring comfort and care to our nation and to all who need help in their time of need.
