While responding to this great national tragedy, the Red Cross continued its mission of helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to life's emergencies-helping to save lives everyday. Locally, thousands of Red Cross volunteers continued their daily work. Just since September 11 your local Red Cross chapter has:

• Helped 125 individuals whose homes were destroyed by fire.
• Opened and operated a shelter for those forced from their home by recent massive power outages.
• Planned and organized 69 blood drives that drew 2,978 units of life saving blood.
• Sent 54 emergency messages between area families and their loved ones in the Armed Services.
• Provided over 4,900 trips for senior citizens to dialysis and medical appointments.
• Taught 2,251 individuals CPR, first aid, babysitting or other health education.
• Assisted 266 low income or unemployed individuals by paying their heating bills.
• Trained over 60 new volunteers who will assist with all of this good work.
