AMERICAN RED CROSS
RESTRUCTURES SERVICE DELIVERY
Services provided by the American Red Cross in Newaygo County will continue uninterrupted despite some organizational changes.
The American Red Cross provides a variety of valuable services to the people of Newaygo County including Blood Services, Disaster Relief and Preparedness, services to the Armed Forces, Health & Safety training and volunteer opportunities.
Due to the effect of a down economy all businesses and organizations have been challenged to tighten their belts and still find ways to meet customer needs. The American Red Cross is no different. Fundraising and other financial support for the Red Cross and many other non-profits has been significantly down. The local Red Cross Board of Directors has been wrestling with balancing the need to be good stewards of the charitable funds it receives and still meet the needs of the people requiring Red Cross services.
Over the last few years, the Red Cross has been fortunate to be able to use funds held in reserve to provide service in the Chapter's jurisdiction, which includes Newaygo, Muskegon and Oceana Counties. However, the local volunteer Board of Directors has determined that this cannot continue. Therefore, decisions have been made to balance the Chapter's budget.
Several steps have been taken to cut expenses, including cutting nonessential travel and training, freezing salaries of the Chapter's small staff and cutting back wherever possible.
In addition, three staff positions have been eliminated. Two positions in the Muskegon Office and one part-time position in Newaygo County. Funding to support the office rent in Fremont will also end soon.
"We are dedicated to providing the same high level of service to all people in our Chapter's jurisdiction despite the economic challenges facing our organization," said Tim Lipan, Executive Director. "As good stewards of the charitable funds we do receive, it is imperative that we develop different ways to continue serving those who need our help."
All Red Cross services remain available to the people of Newaygo County. Through the Red Cross' vast network of local volunteers and paid staff, blood drives continue to happen, members of the military will be served 24-hours a day, disaster relief will be provided whenever disaster strikes and courses in CPR, first aid, babysitting and other health and safety courses will be held on a regular basis.
